Things to do at Borgarfj÷rur eystri

With only a total of 130 inhabitants, the area has plenty to offer, including some of the most populated elfin settlements in Iceland and a tremendous variety of hiking routes. Not only does the area boast a spectacular landscape, a dream for every outdoor enthusiast, but also a good range of accommodation and services. There is great natural beauty in the area, as it is still untouched by mass tourism. Many of the mountains in the area are light and exceptionally beautiful in colour. It is one of the largest rhyolite areas in Iceland, but volcanic basalt is also very common.

The small town of Bakkageri is situated on the coast of the fjord. The two major industries have long been agriculture and small boat fishing, but tourism is a growing industry in the summertime. On the edge of the town is ┴lfaborg, a unique set of cliffs reported to be the home of elves, including Iceland's Queen of the Elves. ┴lfaborg is a protected site and there is a viewing dial at the top. The cliffs have been declared a protected area.

Going to Borgarfj÷rur will offer you a chance to experience a genuine Icelandic fishing village. In addition, you will be in contact with a close community of people renowned for their hospitality. Their local cuisine consists of high quality ingredients from the region, such as the fish brought in fresh every day. The community lives in close proximity with nature and honours a quiet life, making it the ideal place to relax and get in touch with nature.

The small boats marina at Hafnarhˇlmi island has been awarded the Blue On the island and next to it are two viewing platforms for bird watching and excellent facilities for observing puffins. There is also a bird watching house in town.

If you wish to experience untouched wilderness and a pristine landscape in the peace of fjords and inlets, Borgarfj÷rur eystri is the place to visit.
